Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
about the Perrault Micro-Follicular Hair Transplantation Process
Q. What is hair transplantation?
A. Hair transplantation is the process of transferring
hair follicles from the donor area (back and sides of head) where
there is a surplus of genetically superior hair follicles, to
areas of hair loss.
Using the numerous refinements and techniques unique to our practice,
we can now virtually duplicate nature. Typically, the transplanted
hair is indistinguishable from the non-transplanted hair even
on close inspection.

Q. How does the Perrault procedure
differ from other practices?

A. The Perrault procedure involves numerous exquisitely
detailed refinements and techniques that maximize aesthetics,
yielding stunningly natural results, and minimize invasiveness,
making the process much more pleasant and easy for our patients.
"Extreme" emphasis is given to the elements of hair color, texture,
caliber, curl quality, the number of follicles per graft, the
perfect shaping of each graft, as well as the precise angle, direction,
depth and pattern of placement needed to artistically duplicate
the many subtle variations of each patient's natural hair.
Our "extreme" perfectionism requires investing more time and
effort into a single patient than is typically spent on multiple
patients. In fact, many of the factory like techniques employed
by other practices would be considered crude by our standards.
We fully realize that achieving artistic and technical perfection
requires an intense and focused effort. There are no clever "assembly
line" shortcuts. We schedule only one procedure per day and give
that patient 100%.
Q. Is the procedure very painful?
A. As with any procedure using local anesthetic there
is the possibility of experiencing pain, however, the vast majority
of our patients report being very comfortable both during and
after the procedure. During the procedure, a local anesthetic
is administered using a special two-stage technique unique to
our practice. This technique allows us to obtain local anesthesia
with very minimal to no discomfort typically. Most of our patients
(especially those who have had a prior procedure elsewhere) are
pleasantly surprised by the ease of this process. After the procedure
our patients are given a small supply of a mild pain medication
or Tylenol. Many find that they do not require any medication
after their procedure.
Q. How long does transplanted hair last?
A. In contrast to balding areas, follicles within
the donor area (back and sides of head), are genetically superior
and therefore resistant to the hair killing effects of DHT (Dihydrotestosterone).
Hair loss in this area is typically very minimal; i.e., a few
percent over our lifetime. That's why in the vast majority of
patients virtually all transplanted hair will last throughout
their lifetime. In some cases, a small percentage of transplanted
hair may be lost as a patient advances in age.
Q. Does Dr. Perrault offer treatments other than hair transplantation
for hair loss?
A. We feel that it is extremely important to:
1. Consider the whole patient (not merely the bald
spot on the top of their head).
2. Utilize all effective options (not only hair transplantation)
when evaluating and treating hair loss.
This includes a careful consideration of health and nutritional
factors that can be a primary cause of hair loss, or make pattern
hair loss more severe. All effective options are then utilized to
enhance healthy hair growth, minimize further loss, and naturally
restore hair to balding areas. This requires a unique blending of
art and science using an array of treatments that may be pharmacologic,
nutritional, hormonal, biochemical, surgical, and even herbal.
Q. What about those patients that I've seen with unnatural
hair transplantation results?
A. Unfortunately, unnatural or "bad" hair transplantation
results are very common. That's why the phrase "hair transplant"
usually instantly conjures images of odd and unnatural results.
About 30% of Dr. Perrault's practice actually involves the repair
of patients with unnatural hair transplantation results (from
other practices). In contrast, we typically hear reports from
our patients of how their stylist / doctor / family / friends
are amazed, unable to tell the transplanted hair from the non-transplanted
hair even on close inspection. In fact, you may have already seen
our results without knowing it!
Q. Can I see or talk with someone who has had a procedure
by Dr. Perrault?
A. We welcome the opportunity to allow you to speak with
– and depending on where you live – possibly meet one or more
of our many happy patients. Please call our office for details.
